What Is a ChatGPT WhatsApp Connector?
A connector gives ChatGPT access to the WhatsApp tasks you request. It can find a chat, read text messages, summarize a thread and prepare a reply. It does not send until you approve the exact text.
Looking for setup instructions? Follow the step-by-step connection guide. To compare connection methods, read the integration guide.

Link your number once, then ask ChatGPT to look something up or prepare a reply. You approve every outgoing message.

What the connector connects
The connector is a bridge between ChatGPT and the WhatsApp number you already use. It responds to a request you make inside ChatGPT, such as finding a conversation or drafting a follow-up.
It is not a separate WhatsApp contact and it is not an autoresponder. ChatGPT acts when you ask, one task at a time. Any message it prepares stays in approval until you choose to send it.
When a connector is the right fit
Use a connector when you want ChatGPT to help while you are already in ChatGPT. It works well for catching up on unread chats, finding a detail buried in a thread, or preparing a reply you still want to review.
If the work must continue after you close ChatGPT, you need an always-on agent instead. If you need official business templates or large-scale messaging, compare the other methods in the integration guide.
What this connector can do
Once your number is linked, the GPT can do four things:
- List your recent chats — names, last message preview, unread counts.
- Search chats by name — find a person or group without scrolling.
- Read the messages in a thread — then summarize, quote, or answer questions about them.
- Send a text message — but only after it shows you the exact text and you approve it.
What it doesn't do (yet)
- No media or voice notes. It can't transcribe audio or read images, documents, or stickers. Text messages only.
- No sending without approval. It always shows the exact text first and waits for your "yes." No fire-and-forget.
- No always-on monitoring. It doesn't watch your groups in the background or auto-filter spam. It acts when you ask.
- It doesn't replace your phone. Your phone stays the primary WhatsApp device; this is a linked-device session, like WhatsApp Web.
Useful requests to try
The connector is easiest to understand through the tasks it handles:

Connector vs. always-on agent
| You want to… | Use |
|---|---|
| Ask ChatGPT to look up, summarize, or draft a reply right now | Whats App Chat Agent (this connector) |
| Auto-reply after hours, run workflows, qualify leads 24/7 | WhatsBook AI (always-on app) |
| Official Meta templates & API at scale | WhatsApp Business API (separate product) |
The same number can be linked to both — the GPT connector for interactive help while you're in ChatGPT, the app for the things that need to run on their own.
FAQ
Do I need the WhatsApp Business API?
No. The connector uses the linked-device model (the same one WhatsApp Web uses), so it works on your personal number with no Business account, no Meta verification, and no per-message fees.
Does it work on my personal number?
Yes. Link your personal number once with a QR code or phone pairing code, then ChatGPT can list, search, read, summarize, and send approved text replies.
Is it free?
The Custom GPT is free to use. You need a ChatGPT account to open it. There are no per-message fees from us.
Can it send without my approval?
No. It always shows you the exact text first and waits for your explicit yes. There is no fire-and-forget mode.
Can it read images, documents, or voice notes?
No. It handles text messages only — listing chats, reading text threads, summarizing, and drafting or sending text replies.
Is this allowed after Meta blocked third-party AI on WhatsApp?
Meta's policy targets hosted general-purpose AI chatbots operating inside WhatsApp. This connector is different: you operate your own linked-device session from ChatGPT, like WhatsApp Web, and you approve every send.
Is this affiliated with WhatsApp, Meta, or OpenAI?
No. It's an independent Custom GPT. WhatsApp is a trademark of Meta Platforms, Inc. ChatGPT is a product of OpenAI. This tool is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by either.
Troubleshooting
- GPT says WhatsApp isn't connected — open the setup link again, finish QR or phone pairing, then ask it to retry.
- QR won't scan on your phone — switch to "connect with phone number instead" on the setup page.
- OAuth error — use a normal browser tab, re-authenticate in ChatGPT, try again.
- Linked but "no chats" — give it a minute to sync, then ask "list my recent chats."
Is this safe?
Linking uses the same linked-device model as WhatsApp Web: access goes through an encrypted session you explicitly approve, and you can unlink it anytime from WhatsApp → Linked devices. See our privacy policy for how data is handled.
